Biological Dentistry Defined

Biological dentistry embodies the art and science of dentistry as it pertains to the uniqueness of each individual. It encompasses the parameters of health, comfort, function, beauty and longevity. It is focused care.

There are five components of biological dentistry:

1. Biocompatibility
For each individual there is a unique and sometimes very narrow range of dental materials which are compatible to each persons body. Biocompatibility obviates the elimination of restorative materials that are known toxins such as mercury, as well as materials which obstruct the natural electrical systems of the body such as metals in general. There are no restorative biomaterials as those which we were endowed with at birth. The challenge is to determine the best of those materials we have available in our attempts to reverse the effects of dental disease.

2. Biochemistry The bio-chemical processes occurring in each individual are also very unique. Those processes are influenced by nutrition, microbiology, environmental exposures, disease processes, emotions, hormones, genetics, and traumatic injuries: all having a profound influence on the cellular chemistry of the various organ systems.

3. Bioesthetics "Bioesthetics is the study or theory of the beauty of living things in their natural forms and functions" (Dr. R. L. Lee). As it applies to dentistry, it is a process that "accepts biologic form as the basis for comprehensive functional diagnosis and rejuvenation of the stomatognathic system" (Dr. Charles Wold).

4. Biomechanics In nature, form follows function. Form is function. The creator is the ultimate author of form and function. As dental rejuvenation is attempted, natural biologic principles must guide us toward the goal of fully restoring functional health. The form of the teeth, the form of the occluded dentition, and the form of the joints in combination allows comfort, function, beauty and longevity to be reintroduced to a rehabilitated mouth. It is functional harmony.

5. Bioenergetics The first four aspects of biologic dentistry are associated with the physical body. Their effects can be seen and measured with conventional scientific devices.

Matter is energy, as particles of matter even at the smallest level presently known to science, the quantum level, are held together by energy. Each atom or precise combination of quantum particles has it's own unique energy signature and wavelength. Atoms make molecules which make proteins ect.... Thus any disease process in the physical body leading to molecular, cellular or tissular changes will also result in a corresponding change in the energy signature in that part of the physical body.

Bioenergetics applies both to the physical and non physical body. The physical body is energetically connected to the non physical body. It cannot exist without it.

The non physical body, is a body associated with our unseen higher energetic counterparts. This aspect of our being is normally considered to be unseen because the technologies, which render these energies visible to the naked eye, are still mostly in the developmental stages or are not commonly accepted.

The non physical body is completely separated from the physical systems with which it interacts. There are specific channels of energy exchange, which allow the flow of energetic information to move from one system to the other. One of these pathways is called the acupuncture meridian system. With regard to dentistry, it has been determined that each energy meridian originates with the individual teeth and passes on to specific organs of the body. Therefore, the importance of the teeth as they affect general health is paramount. If the energy flow is affected by disease on a particular meridian then the organs that share that meridian may also be effected.

When biocompatibility of materials, the body physiology, the natural form and functional harmony are enhanced by Bio-dental procedures, the bioenergetic effect can be seen, measured and felt.
